The rapid increase of prescription opiate abuse over the past 15 years has led to a national health concern that is only just beginning to be understood. Our program strongly believes the participation of substance abuse treatment facilities throughout the country is crucial to monitoring the incidence of abuse of prescription opiates, in addition to providing essential information about the characteristics, environments and underlying factors related to this issue.
Our goals are that through this research, we will not only be in a better position to develop more effective treatment programs, but will also facilitate preventative measures, educational tools and federal regulations. Together our goals will converge on one important over-riding issue: to reduce the rates of prescription opiate misuse abuse and its negative effects on society.
